The fact that such vinyl wallpaper was known in the world back in the 40s of the last century, and in Russia this finishing material appeared in the 80s. However, technology has changed, and under the popular concept there are many types of wall decoration. To make the right purchase, it is important to know the properties, the main advantages, the shortcomings of the varieties, and consider the suitability for indoor use. Expand your knowledge base and arm yourself with expert advice to avoid being scammed.

Vinyl wallpaper refers to a number of different roll coatings, consisting of two layers: the base (substrate) and the front layer applied to it from polyvinyl chloride - PVC. In everyday life, this polymer is called vinyl.

Variety in store

Key benefits and attractions

First you need to decide what vinyl wallpaper is, how they are “arranged”. This coating is not completely vinyl, but consists of the following layers:

  1. The substrate, made of paper or non-woven fabric, adjoins it when gluing the surface.
  2. The outer layer of PVC - determines the decorative, strength, other performance of this type of wallpaper.

The structure of two-layer paper-based wallpaper

In non-woven wallpaper, some manufacturers provide a third, intermediate layer. Its purpose is to mask the irregularities of the pasted surface.

Advantages are determined by the properties of the front layer and depend on the base. The advantages of vinyl wallpaper, which made them the leaders in sales, are as follows:

  • Strength, wear resistance. These qualities are determined by the density and elasticity of most PVC coatings.
  • Moisture resistance. This property is to some extent inherent in all vinyl wallpaper, which distinguishes them from most other finishing materials.
  • The ability to absorb noise. This feature is more typical for wallpaper with a non-woven base.
  • Light resistance. For many types of other wallpapers, sunlight is detrimental, but this applies to vinyl to the least extent. Special compositions used for coloring are able to withstand ultraviolet radiation.
  • Aesthetics, beauty. An incredible variety of colors, patterns, textures allows you to satisfy the tastes of a variety of people.
  • The ability to mask small defects on the pasted surface.
  • Durability. The service life of PVC wallpaper is from 10 to 20 years (depending on the type).
  • Extensive range. Manufacturers seek to promote their products to the building materials market, giving the consumer greater choice.

Disadvantages and weaknesses of fashionable finishes

Having named the advantages of vinyl wallpaper, one cannot remain silent about their shortcomings. The main problem is the airtightness of the polymer layer. Due to the lack of air exchange between the wall and the room, especially damp, fungus, mold, pathogenic microorganisms can appear under the luxurious coating.

The harm from them can be much more serious than the consequences of the notorious "chemistry", which is so feared by many. Therefore, manufacturers have found the possibility of leveling the disadvantage by treating the substrate with antiseptics with antifungal action. For the same purpose, coatings with micropores are produced that allow air to pass through and allow the walls to “breathe”. With such wallpaper, you can safely decorate rooms with high humidity.

Mold under the wallpaper

The impact of the chemical components that make up PVC (in particular, formaldehyde) should not be ignored either. The possibility of formaldehyde evaporating from vinyl is an established fact, the question is how harmful those quantities of formaldehyde that can stand out from the wallpaper are. Experts assure that the volumes of formaldehyde evaporated from high-quality coatings are insignificant and are unable to cause significant harm.

Moisture resistant materials

But it should be borne in mind that formaldehyde is emitted not only by wall coverings, but also by plastic windows and chipboard furniture. The total concentration of a harmful substance can be significant. If this material is used in the home, some simple procedures should be followed to minimize harm:

  1. Ventilate the room as often as possible. If possible, equip the apartment (house) with ventilation. Maintain the latest.
  2. Systematically care for the outside of the wallpaper: do a wet cleaning or wash.
  3. Carefully approach the choice when buying: usually harmful substances evaporate cheap handicrafts.

Identification label accompanies each roll

Another disadvantage of vinyl wallpaper can be considered their high cost in comparison with simple paper coatings. Especially expensive are non-woven vinyl wallpapers, which are in great demand.

Can washable wallpaper be washed?

Often people assume that all vinyl flooring is washable. But with a real attempt to wash them, they discover with horror that they have violated the decorative layer. This happens due to confusion in terms: the information that the wallpaper is moisture resistant means that they can decorate rooms with high humidity, but this does not mean that they can be washed.

The table below shows the pictograms that are applied to the labels applied to the rolls. They are intuitive, give hints not only about the properties of the material, but also about how to work with it.

Table of symbols on the wallpaper

Referring to such a plate, the choice of wallpaper can be made more consciously:

  • The image of one wave on the label indicates moisture resistance, but such walls cannot be washed, wiping with a damp cloth without the use of detergents is possible.
  • Two waves indicate the possibility of gentle washing with the use of detergents. Three waves confirm: careful processing is acceptable (fanaticism is inappropriate).
  • If there is an image of a brush along with waves on the pictogram, cleaning using a brush and a washing vacuum cleaner is allowed.

Classification and comparison of different types by type of top layer

Vinyl wallpapers are usually classified according to the outer layer and substrate - manufacturers use various raw materials for these components. The top layer is the face of the wall finish, the durability of the repair depends on it.

Varieties and labeling of vinyl wallpaper

In addition to the pictograms on the labels, you can see a letter marking indicating which type of vinyl wallpaper the item in question belongs to:

  • BB - coating with a top layer of foamed vinyl;
  • PV - wallpaper with a decorative layer of flat (smooth) vinyl;
  • РВ - a decorative layer with a pronounced relief, texture;
  • STR - structural coating for painting.

Spectacular texture

From the same polymer, vinyl, with the help of various technologies, very different types of wallpaper (trellis) are made. They differ in both decorative and operational qualities. It is useful to know the characteristics of some varieties of this finishing material in order to understand which type is suitable for which room.

In practice, there are such common groups of vinyl wallpapers:

  • foamed vinyl structural coatings;
  • coverings from smooth (in a different way, flat, kitchen) vinyl;
  • heavy (hard) vinyl coverings;
  • coatings made by silk-screen printing.

Types of vinyl wallpaper

Foamed vinyl - availability and variety

Structural foam vinyl is the simplest and, due to its availability, the most popular type of vinyl wallpaper. The top layer of this coating is characterized by deep relief, low density, and porosity. These qualities give the material such features:

  • The relief contributes to good masking of irregularities and small wall defects, which reduces labor costs when preparing surfaces for pasting.
  • Due to the low density, the sheets are light in weight, which simplifies their gluing, increases the reliability of adhesion to the wall.
  • The porous structure provides the decorative layer with good air permeability, which does not allow mold to develop under the coating. However, this useful property has a downside: moisture can freely penetrate through a loose coating and render the substrate unusable. If such vinyl wallpapers are made on a paper basis, their use in damp rooms is excluded.

Smooth vinyl - the perfect kitchen finish

Smooth vinyl, also known as flat, dense, kitchen vinyl, is thicker, more water resistant, and more durable than foam. In reality, the decorative layer is not always smooth: sometimes manufacturers create a relief on its surface, imitating various other materials (natural stone, brick, tile).

Typically, a decorative layer of smooth vinyl is applied to a non-woven backing. Such coatings can be washed with detergents or without them, according to the moisture resistance of a particular type of wallpaper. Some varieties allow the use of a brush when washing, and especially resistant to cleaning (super washable) can be cleaned with a washing vacuum cleaner. This feature of smooth vinyl wallpaper made them "kitchen" - kitchen walls often require similar care.

Heavy vinyl - strength and versatility

The main difference of wall-paper from firm (heavy) vinyl is the unsurpassed durability in combination with air permeability. These qualities are acquired through the hot stamping process used in its manufacture. An additional bonus from such a technological process is its environmental friendliness: at high temperatures, volatile harmful substances are evaporated from the material.

The properties of hard vinyl allow you to create a variety of patterns on the wallpaper and create decorative effects: imitate fabrics, leather, suede. If we take into account the resistance to mechanical stress and moisture resistance of wallpaper with a decorative layer of heavy vinyl, we can understand that this is the most versatile wall covering that can be used to decorate any room.

Silkscreen - sophistication and originality

Wall coverings made by silk-screen printing make it possible to create a unique decor that pleases for many years. This type of wallpaper is created by hot stamping vinyl-impregnated paper under high pressure. The result is a canvas that resembles a luxurious silk fabric.

Such wallpapers are very expensive, but quite popular, because, thanks to their presentability, they allow you to create an exquisite, and sometimes exclusive design of any room. In addition, they:

  • friction resistant,
  • environmentally friendly,
  • have a dust repellent effect,
  • allow wet cleaning
  • quite durable - serve about 10 years.

Interlining or VS paper - which base is better

Up to this point, the properties of vinyl wallpaper, which are determined by the decorative and protective layer, were considered, and the substrate was mentioned only in passing. It's time to figure out what vinyl wallpaper on a paper and non-woven basis is, what qualities the substrate gives the finishing material.

Advantages and disadvantages of the paper base

What are the advantages of paper-based materials:

  • The cost of paper used as a substrate is low. Products based on it are distinguished by democratic prices, availability for buyers.
  • The paper does not shine through - it is easier to prepare the pasted surface than is required for non-woven wallpaper. Canvases on paper can also be glued to old coatings that have a strong adhesion to the surface over the entire area.
  • The panels impregnated with glue stretch, which makes it convenient to pull them up in the corners, to fit various protrusions, which is important for craftsmen who glue them on their own.

A modest paper backing does not interfere with having a presentable look

Flaws:

  • The last advantage can turn into a serious drawback - when smoothing, the width of the canvases can change in places, this negatively affects the quality of gluing.
  • The strength of paper when wet is greatly reduced - it is easy to tear during operation. It is important to monitor the swelling time of the sheets smeared with glue so that the paper does not get too wet.
  • Edges peeling off when drying are possible. To avoid this, it is required to apply a thicker layer of glue to the edges than to the middle.
  • Often it is necessary to spread glue on both paper and walls, even if the instructions indicate that only the wallpaper substrate needs to be smeared.

Repair in the kitchen

Pros and cons of non-woven base

The advantages that the non-woven base gives:

  • High strength - for interlining it is higher than for vinyl. The possibility of tearing the canvas during gluing is minimal.
  • Good soundproofing properties.
  • The ability to smooth out wall defects, reinforce small cracks, preventing them from growing.
  • The ability to use in damp rooms, due to the ability of non-woven fabric to maintain its properties at high humidity.
  • Ease of sticking. Flizelin does not deform either in dry form or when wet. It is not required to spread glue on the panels, its layer is applied only to the wall.

Disadvantages of non-woven wallpaper:

  • high price;
  • some toxicity of interlining.

Certain types are suitable for decorating a bathroom

Which basis is better for vinyl wallpaper, the manufacturers decided for themselves unequivocally, releasing most of the products based on non-woven fabric. The buyer has to make a choice, focusing on the contents of his wallet. If it is sufficient to purchase non-woven materials, it is recommended that they be given preference.

When gluing, the quality of the adhesive used is important. So that the results of the work do not bring disappointment, you should use types of wallpaper glue that are specially designed for vinyl wallpaper, taking into account the severity (density) of the latter. You should not count on the possibilities of "universal" brands: they can fail, especially in the case of heavy wallpaper.

Glue is better to choose a special

Competitor of vinyl: something about non-woven wallpaper

Sometimes brands made on a non-woven basis are mistakenly called non-woven by buyers. This is not true: such wallpapers constitute a separate class. What is the difference between non-woven wallpaper from vinyl, and which one is preferable?

Interlining is a durable non-woven material made from cellulose fibers, with the addition of a polymer. Cellulose is approaching paper in terms of environmental friendliness, and the orderliness of compressed fibers makes wallpaper look like fabric. The advantages of non-woven fabric have already been considered, in addition, we can say that the material is fire resistant and more convenient for finishing ceilings.

Ceiling decoration with non-woven wallpaper

The structure of non-woven wallpaper: one or more even layers of non-woven base, plus a decorative relief layer of the same material. Due to its composition and breathability, interlining is considered more environmentally friendly than vinyl.

In addition, non-woven wallpaper is more resistant to abrasion. They are produced in two types: with a given color and white, for painting. Both allow repeated repainting, drawing drawings, giving room for creativity.

The presence of wallpaper for painting and a little skill - the exclusive interior is ready

Non-woven fabric has a significant drawback over vinyl: it is translucent, which makes it more difficult to prepare for gluing. The walls in this case must be aligned as much as possible. The color of the walls should be uniform, preferably matching the wallpaper. Another disadvantage is the smaller variety of colors and textures.

There is no definite answer to the question: which wallpaper is better - vinyl or non-woven. The correct choice is possible only on the basis of the characteristics of a particular type, depending on the goals of the buyer and the intended place of gluing.

Coloring on the walls for the joy of kids

Now you can more confidently navigate a large assortment of wall coverings. Do not be tempted by the cheapness of finishing materials from market sellers - it is more reliable to purchase them in specialized stores, where they will show the product certificate and consult professionally.

When planning repairs, it is always necessary to select and buy facing materials. Walls are the most important surface in any room, they greatly affect the visual appeal of the room, so it is important for them to choose the best cladding possible. Among the most popular materials for walls in the modern market, vinyl and non-woven wallpapers are distinguished. In this article, we will look at the advantages and disadvantages of facings to make it easier for you to make a choice.

Non-woven coatings - we determine the advantages and look for disadvantages

To find out which wallpapers are the best on the market, vinyl or non-woven, you must first understand the features of these materials. Non-woven wallpaper is a universal lining, consisting of natural cellulose fibers and polymeric substances, therefore it is used for wall decoration in different rooms. The main advantages of non-woven coatings include:

  • high density;
  • ecological cleanliness;
  • vapor permeability, thanks to which the walls can "breathe";
  • sound and heat insulation characteristics;
  • the possibility of staining;
  • profitability;
  • strong structure;
  • fire resistance.

Speaking about the cost-effectiveness of non-woven coating, it means the need to apply glue only to the walls, and not to the material itself, which remains dry. That is, you can spend less money on glue. To further reduce the consumption of glue, you can pre-putty the surfaces to be formed. Such initial preparation ensures that during the operation of the apartment, the walls in it will remain uniform (spots will not appear due to the non-uniform color of the surface).

This type of wallpaper is used for facing various surfaces: concrete, wood, plasterboard sheets and plastered walls.

Due to the high density of non-woven wallpaper, they can even be used on surfaces with some defects - bumps and small cracks. And thanks to the environmental friendliness of cellulose fibers, the material is suitable for finishing bedrooms, living rooms, as well as children's rooms.

According to the manufacturers, any non-woven wallpaper can be painted. Ordinary wallpapers of this type allow you to paint the lining 1-2 times, so that it can retain its attractiveness for a longer time and will be better protected from negative external influences. Designed for dyeing, they can withstand up to 8-10 stains, retaining their structure, shape and other important technical characteristics. The only parameter of non-woven fabric that suffers due to staining is vapor permeability. The more layers will be applied to the interlining, the worse it will "breathe".

There are several types of non-woven coatings:

  1. 1. Smooth and colorless. They are used mainly for restoration work and are rarely used for finishing living rooms.
  2. 2. With embossed structure. Ideal for decorating walls with minor defects.
  3. 3. With a three-dimensional pattern. Designed for coloring (may already be painted by the manufacturer).

Non-woven wallpaper is very easy to distinguish from analogues - it is a high-density multi-layer facing material. It differs from paper and vinyl in structure, thickness, and other visually noticeable qualities.

Installation of non-woven coatings - we understand the rules of gluing

We recommend that you do not neglect the preliminary preparation of the walls for wallpapering, even if you use dense and reliable non-woven fabrics that are not demanding on the quality of the treated surfaces. Preparation should consist in filling the walls - it is enough to apply one layer of putty to the base. After that, the surfaces should be coated with a primer. It is recommended to use a deep penetration primer. After the primer has dried, you can begin facing work.

For interlining, it is necessary to use a special glue specially designed for this. Non-woven wallpaper adhesive has good adhesion and can securely hold these heavy facing materials on vertical surfaces. Prepare wallpaper rolls, cut them into lengths along the height of the wall, apply a layer of glue on the surface and glue the sheets back to back one by one.

After the glue has dried, you can start painting the surfaces. Despite the possibility of repeated processing with paint, it must be borne in mind that the visual characteristics of the coating will depend on the compatibility of colors. Light paint is unlikely to be able to normally paint previously painted dark wallpaper. We recommend choosing a paint so that it is 1 tone darker than the previous one.

Non-woven coatings must be carefully monitored and looked after. The easiest way to do this is with a dry cloth and a vacuum cleaner. If the surfaces become heavily soiled, it will be easier to repaint them than to get rid of stains by wiping or wet cleaning.

Vinyl wallpaper - how do they differ from analogues?

Vinyl wallpaper is an extensive group of facing materials. These include a range of coatings:

  • wallpaper with foamed vinyl;
  • canvases with silk-screen printing, created by hot stamping of PVC and silk threads;
  • hard coated vinyl;
  • washable.

Such a wide variety of coatings allows them to be used in different rooms of a residential building or apartment. Vinyl wallpapers are available on the market in various colors, with drawings and patterns, so you can choose them for any interior design. With the help of vinyl, you can give the walls any appearance, imitate natural wood, stone, plaster, etc. on the surface.

The positive qualities of vinyl include its high density and resistance to moisture. Thanks to this, such wallpapers can be used even in rooms with the most unfavorable operating conditions - in kitchens, toilets and bathrooms. Previously, it was believed that vinyl is not suitable for decorating surfaces in bedrooms and nurseries due to low breathability and the negative effect of vinyl on the human body. But modern vinyl is environmentally friendly, and therefore does not harm health. In addition, on the market you can find materials with micropores that allow air to pass through.

Most often, vinyl coatings are two-layer. The bottom layer is made of smooth material (paper or non-woven), and the top layer is embossed PVC. This structure makes it easy to stick the wallpaper on the surface and give them the most attractive visual characteristics.

Adhesive for vinyl coatings can be used universal, suitable for both paper and non-woven backing. The gluing procedure will directly depend on the first layer of the coating. For gluing paper sheets, you need to glue both the wall and the canvas, and for gluing non-woven fabrics, you can limit yourself to smearing the wall.

As in the case of non-woven coatings, for the installation of vinyl cladding, you must first prepare the surface: putty and coat with a primer. Since non-woven wallpaper is easier to glue because there is no need to coat the canvas, we recommend choosing them. You do not have to coat the wallpaper, which means you will not need to roll the canvases on the floor. The gluing procedure itself completely repeats the process of installing non-woven materials - there is practically no difference between these works.

Non-woven differ from vinyl in that they can be painted

The main difference between modern non-woven wallpaper and vinyl wallpaper is that they allow you to paint. Repeated painting significantly increases the overall life of the coating, even if the wallpaper loses its original gloss, they can simply be repainted.

Vinyl also has its advantages. It is much better than non-woven fabric to withstand the negative effects of the environment. Different types of coatings of this type are recommended for "wet" areas. In the kitchen, bathroom and toilet, vinyl can serve properly for many years, which cellulose canvases cannot boast of.

You can also use combined coatings - non-woven vinyl sheets. They combine the most important advantages of two different materials, retain their operational and visual characteristics for a long time, withstand negative influences, and sometimes even allow painting.

Regardless of which room you need wallpaper for, what material you prefer, the main thing is to choose only high-quality cladding. Only good coatings from reliable manufacturers have all the advantages described by us, they will be able to decorate the decorated rooms and please their users.

The article deals with how to glue non-woven vinyl wallpaper correctly, the advantages and disadvantages, the choice of glue for them, and the varieties. The article is divided into three blocks.

  • in the first section we consider the concept and classification, the difference in varieties;
  • the second part is devoted to gluing - how to prepare the walls, choose glue;
  • The third part tells whether wall coverings are harmful to health and how to choose in the store so as not to be mistaken.
Vinyl in the interior

What is vinyl wallpaper

They represent a special kind of coverage. The basis is both plain paper and interlining, which is considered to be of higher quality and more expensive.. The upper part is a layer of polyvinyl chloride with different volume, thickness and structure. The material has the property of imitation of various kinds of textures and patterns.

Disadvantages and advantages

In order to decide on the choice of non-woven vinyl wallpaper, a few words about the pros and cons. Advantages:

In the interior of the bedroom

There are also certain disadvantages. The most commonly discussed issues affecting vinyl flooring are toxicity and high cost. One is a direct deliverance from the other: expensive certified canvases are not harmful, while cheap ones are injurious to health.

Differences from paper wallpaper

When choosing how to glue non-woven or paper-based vinyl wallpaper, you should understand their main differences from each other:

Since vinyl chloride has moisture-resistant properties, wet cleaning becomes possible. The canvas is wiped with a damp cloth dipped in soapy water.

Selection depending on the room

The wall covering is selected in different rooms, taking into account the needs that are characteristic of the room.

Vinyl wallpaper - photo in the interior of the bedroom
  • The coating is not environmentally friendly, so refrain from sticking in a child's room or bedroom.
  • They are not afraid of moisture and do not fade due to fumes, ideal for the kitchen or bathroom (they do not compete with tiles or PVC panels).
  • Indispensable in the corridor - they wash and create a certain atmosphere for the apartment immediately at the entrance, depending on the pattern.

Classification

There are several main varieties, and each has its own characteristics. Distinguish:

  • with a layer of foamed vinyl;
  • hot stamping;
  • silk-screen printing;
  • washable;
  • hard vinyl.

A few words about each option.

With a layer of foamed vinyl

Created by applying vinyl to the substrate by screen printing. High temperatures cause an evaporation process, due to which the webs, when interacting with vinyl, form pores and tears. Wallpaper of this type is dense, which prevents the appearance of mold.

There are many varieties: foamed profile (with a relief pattern), foamed with shiny patches, foamed on non-woven, etc.

Pros and cons:

  • foamed vinyl is more environmentally friendly than other types, due to the porous structure - it passes air many times better. Another plus is fire resistance.
  • Of the minuses - insufficient strength of the material. We recommend that you handle the coating carefully, it is more susceptible to damage than other PVC samples.

In a country house

Hot Stamping Wallpaper

Standard two-component variety. Base - paper or interlining. A layer of foamed polyvinyl chloride is applied, on which a pattern is printed. The material is passed through a heating chamber, due to which the vinyl layer softens, and when it is passed through the rollers, the necessary relief and structure is imprinted on it.

Children's room

Thicker wallpapers are called "compact vinyl". They are designed to imitate all kinds of structures - stone, brick, raw wood. Inhibited vinyl wallpaper is the result of a wholly chemical embossing. They are durable, easily react to detergents.

silkscreen

They are produced according to the hot stamping method: polyvinyl chloride interspersed with silk or artificial threads is applied to the base, after which high pressure stamping is performed.

Modern style

The silk-screened canvas consists of two layers, the lower one comes across both paper and non-woven. The upper consists of vinyl with silk thread. The variability of the structure varies - the wallpaper is smooth like silk or with an imitation of texture - plaster or leather.

The motifs of the drawings are floral ornaments and murals, but if you wish, you can move away from the oriental theme and experiment with your own patterns.

Wall coverings are much more expensive than usual, and this must be taken into account when you are planning to glue non-woven vinyl wallpaper in the interior.

Washable wallpaper

Wipe with a damp sponge without causing harm. They are found in the kitchen, where pollution occurs most often.

On the kitchen

When choosing such a coating, remember that there are several varieties of them, each has its own water resistance threshold.

hard vinyl

The strength is many times higher than that of ordinary ones (rapport is about 60-100 cm), and the roll is 15 cm wider. Hard vinyl imitates "Venetian" plaster, painting with coarse brushes, leather, silk, gouache, paper, matting.

Beautiful design

The wall covering is reinforced with high-quality heavy-duty adhesive. They must be glued butt-to-butt (the joints will not be visible after the surface has dried). The effect will be obtained only if the surface is perfectly flat.

By type of base

Vinyl canvases differ in the type of base, the following varieties are distinguished:

  • with paper;
  • with non-woven.

With paper core

Vinyl wallpapers with a paper base are more environmentally friendly. The paper “breathes”, the poet passes the air “more efficiently”.

Red with a golden hue

They are preferred for rooms that are not ventilated as often as they should be.

Interlining is more reliable - paper breaks and deteriorates faster.

With non-woven base

It is called a non-woven material created from cellulose fibers that are held together by a polymer. This is a type of improved paper.

In the interior

The advantages are immediately visible - it is erased more slowly, the fire resistance is many times greater than that of ordinary paper. The disadvantage is that the paper base is preferable as the material is much more environmentally friendly.

Table with decoding of designations on wallpaper rolls

A few words about the designations on the rolls:

Calculator for calculating the number of rolls for gluing

Using the calculator, you will quickly calculate how many rolls you need to cover the room. To begin with, select whether a pattern selection is required - the main factor. Fill out the forms and get the result.

Non-woven vinyl wallpaper is a durable coating that can be washed. They are suitable for decorating the kitchen, hallway and living room. Together with designers, we choose vinyl coverings for the interior of different rooms.

Non-woven vinyl wallpaper: coating features

Photo 1 - Rasch Blue Velvet in the interior of the studio

Washable, i.e. they are moisture resistant, although they do not pass air well (the exception is vinyl wallpaper with micropores). We do not recommend such glue in the nursery, but they are suitable for kitchens, hallways and adult bedrooms.

Such coatings allow the surface of the walls to breathe, but react poorly to moisture. In the kitchen or in the bathroom, it is not rational to paste over the walls with them.

They are less susceptible to mechanical damage, they are thicker and heavier than non-woven ones, therefore, due to the weight of the canvases, it is necessary to use special adhesives. Thicker means denser, more reliable.

Such material is easier to glue. It is less likely that after gluing the canvas will sit down and the connecting seams will open.

Photo 2 - A.S. Creation fleece compact

IMPORTANT! Vinyl on non-woven is a strong material, it does not tear when rolling the canvas on the wall, and embossed wallpaper will hide wall defects well.

Due to the vinyl layer, they are resistant to moisture, so they are suitable for both the living room and the kitchen.

Silk coverings are wallpaper based on paper, but with a layer of PVC: their surface is smoother and looks like shiny silk.

Non-woven vinyl wallpaper: characteristics

These are reliable and durable coatings with high mechanical strength and light resistance: the surface on non-woven fabric does not fade for a long time. They can be cleaned with just a damp sponge, and with special solutions.

IMPORTANT! To stick vinyl, you do not need to apply glue in advance: the composition is applied directly to the wall. This makes it easier to adjust the canvas vertically or along the seam of the strip.

The non-woven base does not get wet, during pasting the canvases are not deformed.

The standard width is 1.06 m (meter-long canvases are easier to glue, with such dimensions the number of seams is halved).

Such coatings do not shine through, they are easy to remove with a whole canvas. According to the European standard, coatings are produced in rolls of 10.05 m in length and 1.06 m in width, which is equal to 10.65 m² of the canvas area ready for pasting.

  • The weight of a standard roll does not exceed 3.6-3.8 kg.
  • The roll diameter is 9-10 cm.
  • Service guarantee up to 20 years.

Modern wallpapers are designed to perform several functions. First of all, this is wall decoration. The density and color of the coating affects the illumination, general appearance and character of the room. In some way, vinyl can serve as walls. Customer reviews are evidence of this.

What is vinyl wallpaper

Vinyl wallpaper is one of the most popular indoor materials. In addition to decorative, they perform hygienic functions: they cover bumps, cracks and pores on the walls. Back in 1947, an American company introduced the world to the first vinyl wallpaper. It was a two layer washable wallcovering. The upper component is a polymer foam called polyvinyl. It is so dense that it can be given a different texture.

Such wallpapers do not need to be pre-applied with finishing putty on the walls. The bottom layer of the product can be either paper or non-woven. Often, antifungal components are added to the composition to prevent the appearance of mold.

The main characteristics of wall materials

Vinyl wallcovering can be smooth without embossing or domed, giving the wall a certain relief. Wallpapers are made by hot stamping (silkscreen printing, chemical stamping, compact vinyl, heavy vinyl). Relief material requires more careful handling.

Wallpaper with a flat vinyl surface is dense and durable, they look out of the ordinary. Despite this, the PVC layer has a porous structure and some air permeability. Non-woven vinyl wallpaper reviews are positive. If subsequent surface painting is foreseen, it is better to purchase a coating with a high relief. Since with each subsequent staining it will be less and less noticeable. If it is supposed to cover the wallpaper with paint several times, then the color scheme should go from lighter to darker shades. It is problematic to remake, for example, lilac color into beige.

Vinyl base

Choosing vinyl wallpaper, you need to decide on what basis they will be. Products on paper are cheaper, but they are afraid of high humidity. The non-woven base is a non-woven material consisting of textile fibers and cellulose. It is used not only for the manufacture of wallpaper, but also for tailoring.
