Officially released as a version for beta testing by developers. Apple, as always, outlined the key advantages of the new firmware. However, a whole lot of small but interesting updates and innovations remained in the shadows. We want to correct this oversight.
This time, iOS 11 hides productivity-oriented functionality. There is a customizable Control Center, the ability to record screens, and much more.

1. Ability to drag and drop multiple apps

You can now select multiple apps on both iPhone and iPad. To do this, click on the application icons and hold until they start to swing. Grab one of the apps and drag. Now click on the icons of other applications to select. Now go to another page and release your finger - all the icons will appear in a new place.

2. Create text requests for Siri

In the section Settings -> Accessibility -> Siri a new toggle switch has appeared that opens up the possibility of working with Siri using text queries.

3. Customizable Control Center

One of the biggest updates to iOS 11 is the redesigned Control Center. These changes are clearly for the better - the Control Center can now really be customized. Visit the section "Control Center" in the menu "Settings" to add the desired settings and remove unnecessary ones.

4. Screen recording

One of the actions that can be added to Control Center is recording screencasts. You can activate the function as follows: by selecting the “Screen Recording” option, you will begin creating a screencast. Click on the blue bar at the top to stop recording. The video file will be saved in the standard Photos application.

5. One-handed keyboard

Owners of iPhone 6 and later models will be able to use the keyboard control mode with one hand. Touch and hold the globe icon. Then tap on the slide keyboard icon to the right or left to display the narrow keyboard.

6. Notification merging

Now you can view all notifications on the locked screen. Simply swipe up from an empty space on the screen to view all notifications.

7. Speed dial keyboard on iPad

8. New tab design displaying device storage capacity

The iCloud Storage and Usage tab is now called iPhone Storage. Now the panel displaying memory usage is placed at the top, and applications are sorted in order of increasing space they occupy. The user will also see the last time they used each application.

9. Ability to delete unused applications

There's a new option in iPhone Storage that allows you to automatically delete old apps when you run out of storage. This deletes only the application, but not the data and documents associated with it. This can be done through the program by viewing the details.

10. Changing the font to a bolder one

In iOS 11, users can expect a slight design change - now everything from the Phone application to Notes uses a bolder font. This is especially true for headings.

11. Merging search and Siri settings

A new Siri & Search section has appeared in the settings, combining the previously separated Siri and search parameters.

12. New settings section

Another newly-minted settings section is called Accounts & Passwords and contains all the settings related to iCloud and Mail accounts. After authorization, you can also view passwords saved in Keychain.

13. Prevent tracking

A new setting in Safari allows you to bypass one of the techniques for tracking user actions on the Internet - Cross-Site Tracking. It is enabled by default.

14. Emergency call - SOS

iOS 11 now has a built-in emergency calling feature. The device will automatically call emergency services when you quickly press the lock button five times.

15. Scanning QR codes in the Camera app

The standard Camera app in iOS 11 can now automatically scan QR codes. All you need to do to activate this feature is to put the camera into code scanning mode.

16. Automatically fill in the password field when downloading third-party applications

iOS 11 supports autofill password option for third-party apps. This means we'll see integration with 1Password in the future.

17. Setting up AirPods headphones

You can customize the double-click gesture for any of the headphones - right or left. This means you can associate one with Siri and the other with playback controls.

18. Manage iCloud Photo Library Sync

iOS 11 gives users the ability to manage their iCloud Photo Library. If syncing pauses automatically, you can resume it manually.

19. Automatic setup

iOS 11 greatly simplifies the process of transferring information from an old iPhone to a new one. During setup, you can transfer information such as passwords, messages, and applications using the special Automatic Setup feature. To do this, simply bring the old iPhone to the new one after seeing the corresponding request on the screen during installation.

20. Long touching app icons on iPad will bring up recent documents

The function only works with certain applications - those that work with files. Simply tap and hold an app icon to see a widget-style pop-up window displaying your recent documents.

21. Replacing iCloud Drive with the Files application

As part of iOS 11, users will no longer see the iCloud Drive application. In its place is the Files app, which is automatically installed on iPhone and iPad when you boot into iOS 11. Files is a more design-wise version of the iCloud Drive app that includes local documents and provides quick access to files stored in memory of cloud services (Dropbox, etc.).

22. Family Sharing for iCloud storage

If you have more than 200 gigabytes of iCloud storage, you can share it among family members using the Family Sharing option.

23. Taking Photos During FaceTime Calls

A new toggle switch has appeared in the FaceTime settings that activates the creation of live photos during FaceTime calls. The feature allows users to take animated Live Photos while chatting via FaceTime. Photos are automatically saved to the Photos app.

24. Update the Calculator application

The Calculator application has received a new icon and a redesigned user interface. The calculator now has round buttons and resembles the numeric keypad in the standard Phone application.

25. Smart inversion

In the menu section "Universal Access" -> "Display Adaptation" -> Color Inversion" there is now a new option called "Smart inversion". It only inverts the colors of UI elements, without affecting images or media files. This is the closest approximation to "Dark mode" which we have today.

26. Convenient zoom in the Maps application

Simply press and hold your finger and swipe up or down to zoom in or out accordingly in the Maps app.

Along with countless small and practical innovations, iOS 11 also received completely new functionality that a modern operating system for mobile devices should have. We've been carefully testing iOS 11 since the first "Beta" and now we present you with six of its coolest features.

Apple cares about its smartphones and tablets. Even users who are “in advanced years” will still have the opportunity to update the operating system of their devices to iOS 11. For both iPhone and iPad, the new version of iOS contains many innovations - first of all, the “Pro” series tablets will become even more advanced and will receive such functions , like a file manager, a new Dock for applications, as well as Drag&Drop and advanced multitasking capabilities.

1 File manager

With iOS 11, there will finally be something that Apple fans have been waiting for for a very long time: a file manager! However, it will not be nearly as powerful as, for example, a similar application for Android - in particular, you will not get direct access to the file system, but, nevertheless, you will now finally be able to copy files from cloud storage simply to the device.

Within this application you can get a preview of all known file formats, for example, images or text documents. In addition, you will be able to view all files and folders according to tags.

2 True multitasking and Drag&Drop

With iOS 11, Apple is finally introducing a multitasking system that truly deserves the name. To do this, you simply need to “pull” the application out of the Dock and use Slide Over or Split View to place it on the screen so that, for example, you can simultaneously take notes and scroll through the application to view the news.

Thanks to this mode of operation, it becomes possible, for example, to simply drag and drop a picture from a website directly into an email. By supporting the Drag&Drop functionality, this is done very easily: just move an image, link or document from one window to another - everything happens immediately and flawlessly.

If you like to watch videos while you work, thanks to numerous customization options, this will no longer be a problem: with iOS 11, you can always play videos in the foreground, even if you are already using two open windows.

3 Updated "Control Center"

In iOS 11, “Control Center” turns out to be radically redesigned; not only the design is new here. You can now change Control Center in Settings by adding different shortcuts, removing them, or rearranging them.

By swiping up from the bottom, using a firmer pressure that is recognized by the 3D Touch system, you can enlarge the corresponding widget to reveal even more options for viewing. In particular, applications such as Apple TV Remote or Wallet can be launched much faster from any other application.

4 Live Photos get more features

Now Live Photo can be equipped with effects such as looping or long exposure. Finally, you can select the “starting” frame - previously this was impossible. In addition, with iOS 11, users will have new filters at their disposal to optimize the captured images with literally one click.

And the new “High Efficiency Image File Format” makes it possible to save photos taken in smaller file sizes, but maintaining the same level of quality. Based on our subjective feelings, we can confirm this: although the image file size dropped from 2.6 MB per frame to “only” 1.5 MB, we could not determine any differences in terms of quality.

5 Never again run out of memory

Known issue: Quite often the built-in memory on an iPhone or iPad becomes insufficient. Since there is no way to expand it using a suitable memory card, this can quickly become a real problem. Finally, the help we need is coming from Apple: in addition to the new video format reducing the size of images and videos, installed programs will soon require less space.

In particular, it is now possible to delete those applications that you do not currently need. In this case, not only the selected applications are deleted from the iOS device, but also the data related to them. However, all personal data is stored encrypted in iCloud, and can then be restored to the device when you reinstall the application that you want to use again.

6 Notes with scanner

The Notes app has a new document scanner that lets you simply capture printed pages and then process them. The app automatically trims edges, and if you're an iPad Pro user, you can use Apple Pencil and Markup to fill in blank fields, for example, to sign a document.

What's especially cool is that thanks to vastly improved handwriting recognition, Finder can even search handwritten notes.

On the evening of September 19, Apple began “distributing” a new version of the iOS 11 operating system. It is called “the largest software release in the history of the iPad,” but iPhone owners will also see the changes. Here are the most important and useful innovations that appeared in iOS 11.

1. Updated control center(caused by swiping up from the bottom of the screen). You can now customize it by adding the necessary items and removing unnecessary ones. By default, there are controls for wireless interfaces, music, volume and brightness, an on/off button for rotating the screen, as well as quick activation of the flashlight, stopwatch, calculator and camera.

On iPad, a list of recently launched applications is displayed along with the control center. They can be unloaded from memory by swiping up.

2. Editing screenshots. Immediately after taking a screenshot (simultaneously pressing the power and home buttons), a miniature of it will appear in the lower left corner of the screen. By tapping on it, you will have access to editing tools.

3. Scanning documents. Notes now has a tool for scanning documents. The system itself tries to straighten out perspective and other distortions, lining up lines and paragraphs smoothly.

4. Dock on iPad. The bottom panel, where six (maximum) applications were previously pinned, has now become dynamic and can contain recently opened programs along with the pinned ones (this can be disabled). You can open the Dock from other applications by dragging your finger up from the bottom edge of the screen. If you do this gesture twice in a row, the control center will open.

5. Multi-window mode. If you open an application (for example, the Safari browser), then “lift” the Dock, “hook” another application and drag it to the top, it will open on top in the form of a narrow column (it can be dragged from right to left and vice versa).

If you pull this column even higher by the top, it will “build” into the work surface (Split View mode) next to the already open window. The two resulting windows can then be resized by dragging the dividing line between them. If Split View mode is no longer needed, just “pull” the right column down by the top. To get rid of it, simply swipe it off the right (left) edge of the screen.

In total, up to four windows can be opened simultaneously in multi-window mode.

6. Screen Recording(you need to add it to the control point manually, it looks like an icon with a circle inside a circle). With this feature you can create a video of what is happening on the screen. Previously, an iPad or iPhone had to be connected to a computer to do this.

7. New App Store. It consists of sections "Today", which contains an editorial selection of new applications, interviews with developers, "Games" and "Applications". The application pages themselves have also changed, becoming more informative.

8. Application "Files". You can link various cloud storages to it and manage all your files and documents. iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox are supported. Now you don't have to open "branded" applications.

9. Updated image and video formats- HEIF and HEVC respectively. The developers managed to ensure that pictures and videos took up less memory space (about half) without losing quality. So there should be more free space.

10. Augmented Reality ARKit, which allows you to point your device’s camera at the world around you and in real time add objects to the image that move, change shape depending on the point of view, and so on. Try searching the App Store for "arkit" - there are already some interesting apps there. For example, IKEA Place or Giphy World, the Walking Dead game.

11. Drag and drop content between applications. It is most convenient to use it in Split View, or when the column of one application is on top of a large window. It is enough to “hook” the picture with a long press and drag it to another window - it will be fixed there. You can also drag and drop links. However, you can drag data into an application that is not yet open.

12. Editing "live" photos Live Photos. Based on moving images, you can now create photographs with long exposure effects (stationary objects stand still, moving ones become blurred and translucent) and “pendulum” (on Instagram this is called Boomerang).

13. New Siri. It received more natural voice acting, as well as support for machine learning technologies. This allows the voice assistant to remember how the owner of the gadget uses various applications and give him hints based on the context.

14. Keyboard for one hand. The standard iOS 11 keyboard now has a one-handed typing mode. To activate it, you need to hold down the button with the globe and move the entire set of keys in the desired direction.

15. New wallpaper. They can be found in the appropriate section. However, if you wish, you can keep the old ones - there are no funny underwater creatures in the iOS 11 collection.

Advice! The most common iOS 11 problems and ways to solve them are described in.

Design

Before the official announcement of the iOS 11 update, there was a lot of speculation that Apple would seriously update the look of its mobile operating system. Unfortunately, a truly large-scale update did not happen. However, some elements of the iOS 11 interface have changed.

In iOS 11, Apple designers have moved to bolder fonts, particularly in headings. In almost all standard apps, the fonts have become darker and bolder, in the style of the iOS 10 version of the Music app.

Some applications, such as Phone and Calculator, have received much more noticeable improvements, which can even be called a full-fledged redesign.

It is noteworthy that many applications, for example, “Calendar” and “Reminders” remained completely unchanged.

Control room

iOS 11 has completely reimagined Control Center. The updated Control Center in iOS 11 is a single screen, instead of three separate ones offered in iOS 10. However, there was no return to the days of iOS 9 - the Control Center received a completely new look with round-shaped icons. The updated default menu includes two sections for adjusting network options, music controls, sliders for changing volume and brightness, as well as several small buttons for locking rotation, controlling Do Not Disturb and other settings.

In iOS 11, Control Center can be customized! Apple finally took pity on users and gave them this opportunity. In Control Center you can now install the necessary functions and applications, which will certainly make using your iPhone and iPad much more convenient.

Previously, the Control Center began to occupy only a small part of the screen when calling, but now it is located over its entire area. Thanks to this, the updated menu provides access to a noticeably wider range of functions, and users have the right to choose which ones.

In the settings of the iOS 11 update, a special section has appeared in which users can add various elements to the Control Center. You can add the following options:

  • Flashlight
  • Timer
  • Calculator
  • Camera
  • Universal Access
  • Alarm
  • Control Apple TV
  • "Do not disturb the driver"
  • Guided Access
  • Home app
  • Low Power Mode
  • Notes
  • Screen Recording
  • Stopwatch
  • Text size
  • Voice notes
  • Wallet app

Along with new personalization settings, expanded 3D Touch gestures have appeared in the new Control Center. By pressing harder on most icons in the Control Center, the user will receive additional options. For example, by pressing hard on the Music application icon, not only playback controls will appear on the screen, but also information about the song being played, as well as auxiliary parameters.

When you hold down the flashlight icon, you can increase or decrease the light intensity.

When you hold down the brightness control icon, there is a convenient adjustment scale and a Night Shift button.

When you hold down the Notes application icon, you have the option to create a new note, list, photo, or sketch. And so on.

On iPad, the new Control Center looks different. It appears on the right side of the screen in both landscape and portrait orientation. The left side is occupied by thumbnails of running applications. The Control Center itself on the iPad is exactly the same as on the iPhone. Menu items can be changed to suit your own needs, and if you hold for a long time, additional options appear.

The control center on iPad is located on the same screen with an updated menu for switching between applications. The latter is located to the left of the Control Center in the form of thumbnails of all open applications. The combined menu is called up by swiping from the very bottom of the screen, or by double-clicking the Home button.

Note that in the first beta versions of iOS 11, in the updated multitasking menu on the iPad, it was suggested to close applications by clicking on the small cross in the corner of the thumbnail. This was completely inconvenient, which, fortunately, Apple noticed, offering the most pleasant and intuitive way to close applications.

Lock screen

The iOS 11 update actually merged the Lock screen with the Notification Center. In its basic state, the lock screen only shows the time and date, but swiping up opens a list of missed notifications. An identical list is presented in the Notification Center, which, as before, can be opened from anywhere in the operating system by swiping down from the very top of the screen.

In iOS 11, the lock screen has two additional pages. Swiping right on the main screen opens a page with widgets, swiping left opens the camera. In this regard, the iOS 11 lock screen is no different from the version from iOS 10.

iMessage and Apple Pay

In iOS 10, Apple introduced apps for Messages and even a separate App Store for iMessage. With iOS 11, the company decided to give users more convenient access to these features. Messages in iOS 11 introduces quick access to stickers, emoji, apps, and games that can be used by iMessage. All you have to do to access them is slide your fingers across the pop-up app bar and the iMessage add-ons you need will appear in front of you.

And this little strip changes absolutely everything. If previously, to send a banal sticker you had to first go to the App Store menu, now selecting and transferring them takes a split second. You can also transfer more useful content, for example, location from Maps, tracks from Apple Music, etc. Thousands of apps from the App Store support iMessage extensions.

In addition, iMessage in the iOS 11 update introduced the ability to send payments between messenger users. Using the special Apple Pay application, iPhone and iPad owners can transfer money to each other using Apple's proprietary payment system. The money you receive is stored on your new Apple Pay Cash card, which doesn't appear in the Wallet app. However, it is full-fledged - you can use it for purchases through Apple Pay, or transfer money from it to a bank account.

It is important to note that the feature of sending money via iMessage will not be available for use in any country in the world when iOS 11 is released. You can use the new iMessage feature in iOS 11 only after the release of one of the next iOS 11 updates, probably iOS 11.1. Apple itself announced this literally one day before the release of the final version of iOS 11. We also emphasize that the function will initially work only in the USA.

However, support for Apple Pay Cash cards will appear in Russia. This is expected to happen during 2018. Apple Pay Cash will be supported on all Apple Pay-compatible devices: iPhone SE, iPhone 6 or later, all iPad Pros, fifth-generation iPads, iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3 or later, and Apple Watch. Transferring money between iMessage users will not be subject to commission, but when withdrawing money, users will have to pay a commission of 3% of the transfer amount.

Important! This feature was presented at WWDC 2017 and appeared in the first beta versions of iOS 11, but was later removed from the system. There will be no iOS 11 in the final version. It is expected that Apple will bring it back in future updates. The next new feature is Messages in iCloud, which stores all your iMessages in iCloud cloud storage. Messages will be synced across all your devices under one iCloud account. An excellent bonus of this storage method will be freeing up space in the memory of the iPhone and iPad, since correspondence and attachments will be stored in the cloud.

The latest addition to iMessage in iOS 11 are two new full-screen effects - Echo and Spotlight.

"Echo"

"Spotlight"

Live Photos

Apple is not losing hope of making Live Photos popular among all its users. iOS 11 introduces three new effects for Live Photos:

  • Looped videos - a “live” photo will turn into a funny looped video.

  • “Pendulum” effect - the photo will be played back and forth.

  • Long exposure - will allow you to achieve the effect of a long exposure, like on SLR cameras.

In addition, “live” photos in iOS 11 can be cropped, choose a different key shot for them, or turn off the sound when playing a Live Photo.

Camera

The iPhone Camera app in iOS 11 has new filters that Apple calls "pro-grade." Thanks to them, skin tone in photographs will become more realistic, and portraits will be as expressive as possible. There are nine redesigned filters optimized for natural skin tones.

Portrait mode has been significantly improved in iOS 11. In particular, image quality has been increased, low light output has been improved, and the mode itself has received support for optical image stabilization. In addition, the flash worked in portrait mode and HDR support appeared for even better lighting.

The Camera app also has the ability to scan QR codes. To scan, just point the camera at the QR code and it will be recognized immediately. After successful recognition, iOS will offer a method for further use of the content encrypted in the QR code. For example, if a phone number is found in the code, the system will offer to call it, and if the link is to a website, then open it in Safari.

New HEIF and HEVC formats

With the iOS 11 update, Apple switched to new photo and video formats - HEIF and HEIC, respectively. The main feature of these formats is improved compression. Media files are compressed up to two times without losing quality. This means that photos and videos taken with an iPhone or iPad camera will take up half as much space in memory and iCloud cloud storage.

It is important to note that media files in the new formats are compatible with devices that do not support them. When you send or transfer photos and videos in HEIF and HEIC formats, they are automatically transcoded into readable formats for viewing on any device. Thanks to this, the situation with Live Photos, which cannot be viewed anywhere except the latest iPhone and Mac models, will not happen again.

Photo

Face recognition in photos in iOS 11, like many other data, is now synchronized with other devices. This means you only have to tell Photos once about the person in your photo, and the updated system will then sync that information across all your devices. In addition, the selection of photos for the “People” album has become more accurate.

The Photos app now supports GIF animations. They play when clicked and are automatically collected into a new "Animated" album.

The number of types of “Memories” (automatically created thematic collections of photos and videos) in iOS 11 has been significantly increased. The system creates memories based on weddings, sporting events, pictures of pets, etc.

Technically, Memories has also been improved. In iOS 11 they adapt content for portrait and landscape orientation.

App Store

The App Store has been completely redesigned. So completely that even the app icon has been changed for the first time since the App Store launched nine years ago.

However, the main changes in the App Store in iOS 11 are contained inside. After the update, the App Store greets users with five tabs:

  • Today,
  • Games,
  • Applications,
  • Updates,
  • Search.

The Today tab contains today's most relevant content, as determined by App Store editors. Here, the “Game of the Day” and “App of the Day” sections are updated daily, which, again, are carefully selected by Apple employees.

In addition to these sections, various applications with detailed descriptions, collections and even articles regularly appear on the “Today” tab, in which developers most often describe the process of creating their applications and games.

The “Games” and “Applications” tabs, as the names suggest, are dedicated to games and applications from the App Store. Apple decided to separate games and applications into separate tabs in order to give users the opportunity to find exactly what they are looking for in the most convenient way. So, if you are not at all interested in games in the App Store, in the updated App Store they will flash before your eyes only on the “Today” tab, in very limited quantities.

The new App Store features more video previews, Editors' Choice stickers, and easy access to user ratings and in-app purchases directly on the app and game pages of the new App Store.

The App Store in iOS 11 has improved not only externally. The main technical upgrade to the Apple app store was improved search. Searching in the App Store has become much easier - the “smart” mechanism suggests very accurately, and also provides links to relevant articles, tips and tricks, and selections.

Siri

Siri improves with each new version of iOS, and iOS 11 is no exception in this regard. Apple's proprietary voice assistant has been updated with more realistic female and male voices that are much more similar to human ones. According to Apple executives, the new Siri voices were created using deep learning to achieve better pronunciation and a more expressive voice.

The main innovation of Siri in iOS 11 is invisible. The voice assistant has become self-learning, and it learns directly on the device, without sending user data anywhere. Thanks to machine learning, Siri will be able to learn more about the user's interests, which will enable it to make better recommendations.

Another important improvement to Siri is that the user information stored by the assistant is automatically synchronized with all devices that are authorized under the same Apple ID account. This means that Siri will know you just fine whether you're using your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

In iOS 11, users can ask Siri to translate text from English to Chinese, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Support for other languages will be implemented in the coming months. Apple representatives did not specify whether Siri will support translation into or from Russian.

In addition, Siri has learned to form an understanding of users’ musical tastes. Based on this information, the voice assistant can suggest suitable music from Apple Music. When listening to songs from the music service, Siri can also answer various small questions related to the music, such as “Tell me who the drummer of this band is?”

An option has appeared in Siri settings that allows you to contact the voice assistant using text commands. You can enable the option in the “Settings” → “General” → “Accessibility” → Siri → “Text input for Siri” menu.

Siri in iOS 11 gains support for the Notes app (creating notes, to-do lists, and reminders), remote banking apps for bank transfers and accounts, and apps that display QR codes.

And finally, Apple has given third-party developers access to the SiriKit API, thanks to which they can fully integrate the voice assistant into their applications.

Files

In iOS 11, the iCloud Drive app has disappeared and is replaced by a completely new Files app, which is similar to the Finder on Mac. Files offers access to all files stored locally on your iPhone or iPad, data from iCloud cloud storage, content from apps, and all files and folders from third-party cloud services such as Dropbox, Box, OneDrive, Google Drive and others .

User data is very well organized in the Files app, providing quick access to all content stored on your iOS device. Like Finder on the Mac, the Files app lets you search through files, has a section to view all your recently retrieved files, subfolders, and the ability to add files to your favorites.

Third-party developers may support Files in their applications. Files-enabled apps appear in the sidebar of the standard file utility, making it much easier to transfer documents, photos, videos, and other content between them.

iPad Features

As Apple itself says, iOS 11 is a “giant leap for iPad.” And you can’t challenge this statement even if you try hard. iOS 11 greatly enhances the functionality of Apple tablets.

iPads running iOS 11 will look even more like Macs. This is largely due to the new Dock panel, which can accommodate significantly more applications (up to 15). The updated Dock panel is available on any screen in iOS 11. The panel is “smart” - as you use it, the most frequently used applications, as well as those that were recently launched on your iPhone or Mac, will appear on its right side.

The Dock panel will help open up multitasking. Any additional application on an iPad running iOS 11 can be opened directly from the Dock in Split View and Slide Over modes. The redesigned menu for switching between applications, again “smart,” will remember your preferences and allow you to quickly return to familiar combinations, for example, a text editor and browser.

The drag and drop function completes the picture. iPad users with iOS 11 installed will be able to transfer text, files and photos from one app to another in the most intuitive gesture.

A striking example of the basic use of the drag-and-drop function is the ability to bring up the Dock panel from an already running application, from which you can drag a new application directly onto the screen. With this simple action, you can open two applications on one screen in Split View mode, or place a new application on the right side of the screen thanks to Slide Over mode. There are many advanced ways to use the drag-and-drop feature. For example, you can drag text, images, links, and other content from a web page in Safari to any other application.

Apple Pencil

Apple decided not to stop at the numerous improvements listed above in iOS 11 for iPad. With the advent of iOS 11, the Apple Pencil stylus has become a more versatile tool. Pencil has learned to make quick marks on PDFs and screenshots, create notes directly on the lock screen, and draw in apps like Notes and Mail.

Notes

The Notes app in iOS 11 now includes a document scanning feature. It automatically detects and scans the document, trims all unnecessary edges, eliminates glare and corrects irregularities.

QuickType keyboard

The standard QuickType keyboard in iOS 11 now supports one-handed mode. To activate the mode, you just need to hold down the globe or emoji button, after which the keys will move slightly to the right, which makes it convenient to type text with one hand. Note that the mode only works on iPhone models with large displays (from 4.7 inches).

The iPad version of the standard keyboard in iOS 11 has received a small but very nice improvement. Symbols, numbers, letters and punctuation marks are now located on one keyboard. Thanks to this, users will be able to forget about the need to constantly switch between layouts. In iOS 11, to select the desired character, just swipe down on a key.

The latest innovation of the QuickType keyboard will definitely please residents of some CIS countries. iOS 11 adds new layouts for Armenian, Azerbaijani, Belarusian, Georgian, Irish, Kannada, Malayalam, Maori, Oriya, Swahili and Welsh.

"Do not disturb the driver"

iOS 11 introduces a new feature - Do Not Disturb the Driver. It silences all incoming notifications on the iPhone while the user is driving. When in active mode, the iPhone screen always remains dark, eliminating any chance of being distracted by it while driving. To activate a feature, you must first add it to Control Center. Do Not Disturb Driver mode can also be turned on automatically, provided that the iPhone has the ability to connect to the car system via Bluetooth.

AirPlay 2

iOS 11 debuts a new version of the second generation of AirPlay technology. The key innovation of AirPlay 2 is the ability to control multiple audio sources at once from an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch running iOS 11. With AirPlay 2, users can select different songs to play in different rooms, while setting the desired volume for each audio source. Or you can play the song on several speakers simultaneously with perfect synchronization.

Quick setup function

To set up a new iPhone or iPad with iOS 11 installed, you just need to bring it closer to another iOS device or Mac. The gadgets will “recognize” each other and personal settings and passwords from iCloud Keychain will be transferred to the new device.

AR Kit

With the release of iOS 11, Apple decided to support the development of augmented reality technologies. The company has launched AR Kit, a set of tools with which developers can create applications and games that support augmented reality. The developers immediately began to happily take advantage of the opportunity that had arisen. Below we have presented several examples of implementing augmented reality support using AR Kit for iPhone and iPad.

) will release a new version of its operating system. It will be called iOS 11.

By downloading it, iPhone owners will receive many innovations, including a new lock screen and support for augmented reality applications. But the company pins much greater hopes for iOS11 on the iPad. It is expected that the functionality of the new OS will be so great that it will allow tablets to actually replace laptops.

So, here are the nine most important updates to iOS 11, which can be installed on 22 Apple gadgets.

1 /5

1. Easier interaction with Siri

1 /5

Thanks to machine learning technologies, Siri will be able to suggest news or music to you based on your tastes. Finally, users will be able to communicate with her using notes. This may seem like a step backwards, but it's still a very useful feature, especially if you're in a place where talking out loud isn't comfortable.

2. Simplified control center that can be customized

1 /5

In iOS 10, the control center was quite confusing and inconvenient, but in the new OS everything is different. Instead of three panels, the developers left one, so that all frequently used functions and applications will be included in one place.

In addition, the control center can be configured independently by attaching the necessary buttons to selected places. What's new is a remote control button for Apple TV, HomeKit control, and a button to turn on the Do Not Disturb While Driving mode. The old buttons - camera, flashlight and calculator - are still there.

3. Apple Pay in iMessage

1 /5

In addition, iMessage received a new interface and several convenient features - for example, QuickType. With its help, users will be able to type text with one finger by moving the keyboard closer to the selected edge of the screen.

4. Augmented reality function

1 /5

For the first time in iOS 11, ARKit, an augmented reality software environment, will appear. With its help, users will be able to overlay virtual images on top of real images. The technology can be used in games, cards or online shopping.

5. Updated App Store

1 /5

Apple has radically updated its application store. Now it will be much easier to find new applications and games. In addition, the App Store will feature stories and interviews with iOS developers about their work.

6. Multitasking on iPad

1 /5

In iOS 11, iPad users will be able to work simultaneously in three applications - instead of two. To do this, you will need to drag the application to the desired part of the screen, turning on Split View mode.

7. Easily move files

1 /5

It's pretty straightforward, but now users can move text, photos, files, and even links from one app to another with just drag and drop. So, you can click on a photo and transfer it to the Mail app, which will automatically open a new message.

8. File Manager

1 /5

In iOS 11, Apple introduced the Files app (similar to Finder on macOS or File Explorer on Windows). It will combine files from all storage locations in one place and provide quick access to them. In addition to Apple's proprietary cloud, DropBox, Box and iCloud Drive can be connected here (unfortunately, not a word about Google Drive).

This is Apple's most obvious attempt to make the iPad more laptop-like.

9. Updated Dock

1 /5

If previously iPad users could only open the Dock from the home page, now it is accessible from any application. You can add 13 icons or folders to it (their set changes - recently launched applications are added to the applications pinned by the user). All this makes the iPad even more like a mini MacBook.
